Capitol Square Businesses to Celebrate Arrival of Spring with Spring in the Square
Saturday, April 11, from 12 to 4pm
East Arlington —Capitol Square businesses are hosting a new event, Spring in the Square on Saturday, April 11, from 12 to 4pm. Spring in the Square celebrates the arrival of garden parties, bright colors, fresh air and lighter fare.
“Spring in the Square is inspired by the garden party that Derby Farm holds every year,” says Diane Buxton owner of Luv and Other Gifts. Derby Farm Flowers & Gardens moved to Capitol Square in February.
“It’s a fun way to kick-off the season,” says Derby Farm’s Barbara Popolow. “And we have a lot to celebrate, as we’ll be hosting our grand opening on Saturday evening from 5 to 7pm as well!”
Beginning at noon on Saturday, visitors can follow colorful pinwheels around Capitol Square to find spring-inspired activities for all ages, including garden & tea parties, trunk shows, sidewalk sales, giveaways, free crafts, and sweet spring treats.
Derby Farm will hold demonstrations on potting up early annuals, with plants and pots customers can purchase to create their own container gardens. All garden tools, gloves, plants and planters will be on sale for 20% off.
And just outside, Willow Baby Studios will offer portraits, from 2 to 4pm, in front of hand-drawn chalk flowers on the brick wall. For $25, a high-res digital file will be delivered via email within 10 days. Perfect for a mother’s day portrait!
At Artbeat, visitors can pick up flower balloons and choose from two activities that celebrate National Pet Day (also on April 11): making colorful bookmarks (free) and decorating ceramic pet bowls ($12).
Next door, Maxima Gift Center will host a "Tea & Skinny Dips Party," featuring organic tea from Common Folk Farm in Maine and light recipes from the book "Skinny Dips," with a new collection of ceramic mugs, bowls and teapots for spring.
Across the street at Luv and Other Gifts, Melissa Tarr of Designs of Mine will demonstrate fun and different ways to wear her colorful spring shawls. Also at Luv, kids can celebrate the warmer weather by making their own colorful streamers. Next door, Artwear will have a spring sweater and scarf sale.
At the Fox Library’s “Special Saturday Opening,” visitors will enjoy a spring-inspired craft from 2 to 4pm, with free treats at the Little Fox. Follow the stream of bubbles to Something Sweet Without Wheat for a bubble blowing party with free samples of their favorite spring cakes and cookies.
A few doors down, 13FOREST Gallery will celebrate spring with a new collection of popular hand-carved porcelain by Stephanie Young.
And back at Derby Farm, the fun continues into the evening, from 5 to 7pm, during the “grand opening” celebration, with refreshments, a raffle for a spring planter, and a 20% off storewide sale. Next door, Artbeat will hold an Etegami drawing demonstration from 6 to 8 pm featuring a variety of flowers.
